It’s All Good - So Far

After 5 months of assignments, study, lectures, online quizzes and exams, first semester is over. Well, actually it was over at the end of June at the end of the exams butthere has been an agonising wait for the results. And they’re in!!! And they’re better than I was expecting. But before I give you all the gory details, a bit about my worst nightmare - my computer unit.

We had 3 assignments to do as well as a weekly online quiz and participation in online discussions, generally and answering specific questions. Due to human error (mine!!) and computer errors (theirs) 2 of the 3 assignments were 5 days or more late which equals a big fat “0″ for my mark. Let me tell you, they aren’t very forgiving with time frames. So I went in to the exam knowing that I had to pull some kind of super human effort to get me a pass for the unit. I figured that I was probably on about 50% overall for the unit or less so needed to get myself over the line. And all the subjects this semester had about 30% of the overall mark for assignments etc and 70% for the exam. Ugh……..

Exam day arrives and we knew that we had 50 multiple choice questions and 5 short answer questions to make up the 100% of the exam. Somehow the exam was sent out with a few “small” typos. Instead of a, b, c, d for the multiple choice, in that order, some were like that but most were a, c, b, d. So…… what to do??? Assume that the second answer in the list is B despite the fact that it has a C next to it, or go with the letter next to the answer. We were told to go with the letter next to the answer we wanted, but found out after the exam that different centres were told different things. Hmmm, like I needed more of a challenge. NOT!!!!!

So, the agonising wait started for the results. I felt pretty confident about the other 2 units - Microeconomics and Intro Accounting, but I was seriously worried about the computer unit. And the waiting continued.

Finally the results came through Friday afternoon - and I passed everything. That in itself is cause for celebration, given the ummm, glitches, that I had with computers. But, not only did I pass I have completely blown my own expectations of my results out of the water - I got a High Distinction for Accounting. I am so excited about it still.

But the best part: for me it means that I am coping with the workload, have an understanding of what we are studying and it gives me a huge confidence boost to keep going next semester, and the ones after that. It proves to me that the leap of faith that I have taken in myself, and my abilities, is justified. And don’t we all need a confidence boost every now and then????

So, for anyone sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to shoot for the moon or stay with what you know and what’s safe, I say, shoot for the moon. And then some. Believe in yourself. Its not always easy to do, but start with baby steps (for me that is one semester at a time) and go from there. If I thought about how long the course will take, then I wouldn’t have done it. Six years of studying just seems way too long, but a couple of subjects a semester is manageable.

Go on, got for it. If I can, anyone can.
